To Bear Witness

So what does it actually mean to bear witness?

Bearing witness means to testify, or provide evidence, to show that something exists, has happened or is happening.

If something bears witness to a fact, it proves that it is true. If a person bears witness to something, they are using their own experience or knowledge to prove that an event happened.

When we bear witness to events happening around the world during our everyday lives, we are part of that experience. Stories and tragedies are happening all around us.

When we are eye-witnesses to something however, this is a different principle. Eye witnessing comes from a person who has firsthand knowledge and physical experience of an event – who saw the event unfold in front of their eyes.

Both principles, however, are key to bringing to light stories of war, climate destruction, devastation, resilience, community and hope.
